Chukkala Amavasya, or Gouri Vratam, is noticed on the no moon day (Amavas) in Ashada Masam primarily in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by some Hindu Telugu communities. In 2023, the date of Chukkala Amavasya is July 17. An observance devoted to Goddess Parvati generally known as Gauri Vratam is noticed on the day. Married girls carry out Gowri Vrata for a cheerful married life and single girls for good life companions.
Ladies carry out particular pujas devoted to Goddess Gowri on the day. After early morning bathtub, girls begin the puja by providing prayers to Lord Ganesh. An idol of Goddess Gauri is constructed from turmeric paste and 16-steps of pujas are provided. A sacred thread is worn by girls on the day after particular pujas.
In some areas Gowri Vratham pooja is carried out as a group puja. Ladies alternate the puja threads.
A kind of dough balls is ready on the day and is obtainable as Prasad.
In Karnataka, Gouri Vratam is named Bheemana Amavasya Vrata.
